Fort Stewart PCS · Hinesville, GA · Updated October 2026

If you just got orders to Fort Stewart, Hinesville is probably the first town everyone mentions, and for good reason. Main post sits right in town, homes typically run $240,000 to $270,000, and for many ranks the 2026 Fort Stewart BAH lines up comfortably with a mortgage payment here. I'm Ambar, a military spouse and REALTOR who has been stationed at Fort Stewart twice (plus Fort Drum, Fort Riley, and Grafenwöhr, Germany). This is the guide I wish someone had handed me the first time we drove through Gate 1. ¡Y sí, hablo español!

Living in Hinesville GA: the quick picture

Hinesville is the closest city to Fort Stewart, home of the 3rd Infantry Division, "Rock of the Marne." It has a small-town feel, but it has grown a lot in dining, shopping, and recreation. You can run to the commissary, catch a kid's practice, and grab dinner without ever getting on the highway.

A few things to know before you arrive:

  • Weather: Summers (May to September) are hot and humid, and hurricane season is real. Winters are mild, and spring here is beautiful.
  • Getting around: Savannah and the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport are about 40 minutes away.
  • Size of post: Fort Stewart covers about 280,000 acres, the largest Army installation east of the Mississippi, so where you work on post can change your best gate.

Your exact payment depends on price, rate, taxes, insurance, and any HOA, so let a lender run the real numbers. Here is what I tell every buyer using a VA loan:

My VA loan tips for Hinesville buyers

  • $0 down and no PMI with full VA entitlement.
  • Get your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) early through your lender, online, or with VA Form 26-1880.
  • Know the funding fee: 2.15% for first use with 0% down and 3.3% for subsequent use. It can be rolled into the loan, and you're exempt with a service-connected disability rating.
  • Get pre-approved before your house hunting trip. The market moves fast during PCS season, and sellers want buyers who are ready.

Fort Stewart gates near Hinesville and commute tips

Living in Hinesville means your commute is usually measured in minutes, not miles. Knowing your gate makes it even easier.

Gate Hours Good to know
Gate 1: CPT Jess Wooldridge 24/7 Busiest gate; Visitor Control Center is here (closed weekends and holidays)
Gate 3: CPT Maurice Britt 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Good alternative to Gate 1; closed weekends, training, and federal holidays
Gate 5: CPL Hiroshi Miyamura 24/7 Trusted Traveler 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Gate 7: COL Lionel C. McGarr 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Handy near 15th Street and Airport Road, or coming from Ludowici
Gate 8: PFC John L. Barkley 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Close to several Hinesville hotels

My local commute tip

  • Avoid Gate 1 during morning PT hours (6:30 to 8:30 AM) and afternoon release (4 to 6 PM) if you can.
  • Do a test drive to your unit's area at rush hour before you make an offer. I'm happy to do it for you on video.

Hinesville neighborhoods to know

Every family's must-have list is different, so here are a few neighborhoods near base that come up a lot in my searches:

  • Less than 20 minutes to base: Tranquil South, Villages on Marne, The Crossing at Independence, Pine Ridge, Oak Crest, and Cherokee Station.
  • Communities with amenities: Oak Crest and The Enclave at Oak Crest (pool, playground, sidewalks), Cherokee Station (pools, playground, sidewalks), Griffin Park (pools, playground, green space), and Tranquil South (pavilion, walking trail, playground).
  • New construction in the area: Boundary Hall, Heritage Pointe, Heritage Pointe Townhomes, Cottages on Carter, Tatum Crossing, and Grand Reserve, among others.

Thinking about renting it out after you PCS? Many of my clients keep their Hinesville home as a rental. Being close to post helps it appeal to future military tenants, and I can connect you with property management before you ever leave.

Schools and childcare in Hinesville GA

Hinesville and Fort Stewart are served by the Liberty County School District, which offers AP, career and technical education, and dual-enrollment programs. There are also several private and faith-based schools in the county.

Heads up: school zones changed for 2026-27

  • Some Hinesville neighborhoods were rezoned this school year, so never assume a listing's school info is current.
  • Call the Liberty County Schools Military Family Coordinator at (912) 877-5037 with the exact address.
  • Or just send me the address, and I'll call the district for you.

For little ones, get on the on-post Child Development Center waitlist the day you get orders, since waits can run 6 to 12 months. Apply for off-post fee assistance at the same time. Off-post options in Hinesville include Hinesville Child Care Learning Center on Martin Street and Little Treasures Learning Center on E.G. Miles Parkway.

Things to do in Hinesville this fall

Fall is one of the best times to land in Hinesville. The humidity finally breaks, and there's a lot going on:

  • Fort Stewart Fall Carnival and Oktoberfest: a fall tradition on post with rides, food, and family activities. Check the Stewart-Hunter MWR calendar for this year's dates.
  • Bradwell Park: open space and fresh air for an easy family afternoon.
  • Taylors Creek Golf Course, Liberty Cinemas, and the Liberty County Public Library for low-key weekends.
  • Liberty County Illuminated Christmas Parade: a longtime December tradition through downtown Hinesville.

And my personal favorites: coffee and laptop time at Sunbury Coffee Bar in downtown Hinesville, dinner at Latin Nation when I'm craving a taste of Miami, browsing Dawson's General Store, and German comfort food at Zum Rosenhof. When we need a weekend away, Jacksonville is about 2.5 hours and Orlando about 4 hours down I-95.

Where to stay while you house hunt in Hinesville

On-post lodging at IHG Army Hotels Main Lodge (912-369-6962) fills up 2 to 3 months ahead during PCS season, so call as soon as you have orders. Off post, my go-to recommendations are La Quinta Inn & Suites Hinesville, Baymont by Wyndham Hinesville Fort Stewart Area (about a mile from Gate 8), and Holiday Inn Express & Suites Hinesville East. Always ask for the military or government rate; it isn't applied automatically.
