Hinesville GA Schools: A Guide for Military Families

by Ambar Michelle Caraballo

PCS & Relocation · Schools · Updated October 2026

The short answer: families PCSing to Fort Stewart have several school options, including DoDEA elementary schools on post, Liberty County public schools, neighboring districts, private schools, and plenty of Pre-K and childcare choices. Which one your child attends depends on your address, so I never recommend choosing a home based on a school name alone. Look at school, commute, neighborhood, childcare, and your child's needs as one big picture.

I'm Ambar, a military spouse who has been stationed at Fort Stewart twice, plus Fort Drum, Fort Riley, and Grafenwöhr, Germany. School questions are some of the first ones PCS families ask me, so here's how I'd walk a friend through it.

Quick answers

Do I have to live on post for my child to attend a DoDEA school?
Yes. Eligibility for the DoDEA elementary schools is tied to living in family housing on the installation.

Are there DoDEA middle or high schools at Fort Stewart?
No. Students in grades 7–12 attend schools in the surrounding community, no matter where the family lives.

Will every Hinesville home feed into the same school?
No. Verify the school assignment for the specific address before you fall in love with a house.

What school options do military families have near Fort Stewart?

Depending on where you live, your family may be looking at:

  • DoDEA schools on Fort Stewart
  • Liberty County School System
  • Long County School System
  • Bryan County School System
  • Wayne County School System
  • Private schools
  • Pre-K and childcare programs

This is where your home address becomes important. A house can look perfect online, but if the school setup doesn't work for your family, it may not be the right house.

DoDEA schools on Fort Stewart

If you're planning to live on post, Fort Stewart currently has three DoDEA elementary schools:

  • Diamond Elementary School
  • Kessler Elementary School
  • Murray Elementary School

Eligibility is tied to living in family housing on the installation, and there are no DoDEA middle or high schools on post. That distinction matters: the on-post school picture looks very different for an elementary-aged child than for a family with a middle or high schooler. Fort Stewart also provides school support services, including transition assistance, youth sponsorship, tutoring resources, and help navigating local school options.

Liberty County School System

For many families in Hinesville and nearby communities, the Liberty County School System (LCSS) is the main public school system to research.

Level Schools
Elementary Button Gwinnett, Frank Long, Joseph Martin, Liberty, Lyman Hall, Taylors Creek, Waldo Pafford
Middle Lewis Frasier, Midway, Snelson-Golden
High Bradwell Institute, Liberty County High School
Other Liberty College & Career Academy, a Pre-K Center, and Horizons Learning Center

LCSS has an online enrollment system, including information for the 2026–2027 school year. One important thing for home buyers: don't assume every home in Hinesville feeds into the same school. School boundaries and enrollment requirements can change, so the district should be your final source for confirming where your child will attend.

Surrounding school districts

Hinesville isn't the only area military families consider. Your school options can change as your home search expands.

District Where you'll run into it Good to know
Long County Ludowici Elementary, middle, and high school options, including Long County High School. Appealing if you want more space and still want to stay in the Fort Stewart area.
Bryan County Midway and east toward Richmond Hill The school conversation can be just as important as the Fort Stewart commute.
Wayne County West toward Jesup Another option if your search widens beyond Hinesville.

That's why I don't recommend choosing a neighborhood based on school information alone, or choosing a school without considering your daily commute. You need to look at both.

Liberty County schools worth researching

Rather than a generic “best schools” list, here are a few Liberty County schools that may be worth a closer look based on your child's age and interests.

Taylors Creek Elementary

Worth a look if gifted education matters to your child. Families often research it for its Gifted and Talented program and academic performance.

Lewis Frasier Middle School

A middle school (grades 6–8) families often research for academic performance and student-teacher ratio. LCSS has identified it as a federally identified school and is implementing improvement and support efforts, so look at the most current school information rather than an old rating or review.

Liberty County High School

Offers a variety of academic and career-focused opportunities, including Advanced Placement, dual enrollment, and career and technical education pathways. If your teen is interested in agriculture or FFA, LCHS has an active FFA program for the 2026–2027 school year.

Liberty College & Career Academy

A great option if your child is interested in career and technical education, with pathways that can connect students to technical college opportunities and industry-focused training. For some students, that can matter just as much as a traditional college-prep path.

Don't forget Pre-K and childcare

Families with younger children aren't only searching for elementary schools. They're asking: Where can my toddler go? What about Pre-K? Is there before and after-school care? What if the CDC is full? Childcare can become a major part of your PCS planning.

On post: Fort Stewart Child Development Centers serve eligible military and other qualifying families through Army Child & Youth Services. Register through Parent Central Services, and if a center is full, join the CYS waitlist and you'll be contacted as openings become available. Get on the waitlist as soon as you know you're coming, and look into fee-assistance options for off-post care.

Off post:

  • Hinesville Child Care Learning Center, 204 Martin Street. Toddler, preschool, Pre-K, and before-and-after-school programs. The center's website says it is NAEYC accredited and a 3-Star Quality Rated program.
  • Little Treasures Learning Center, 1695 Elma G. Miles Parkway. Care from infants through school-age children, including Georgia Pre-K and before/after-school programs.
  • Care by Claudia, an in-home provider recommendation. Availability and licensing can change, so treat it as a personal recommendation to investigate, not a guarantee of openings.

Military families have more school support than you may realize

My biggest piece of advice: use the resources that already exist for you. Fort Stewart's School Support Services can help with:

  • School district information and boundaries
  • Registration and transferring records and credits
  • Extracurricular activities and youth sponsorship
  • Tutoring resources and school transitions
  • Special education resources

Military & Family Life Counselors (MFLC). Liberty County School System has Military Family Student Support Services, and Fort Stewart notes that Child & Youth Behavioral MFLCs support children, parents, and school staff across surrounding school systems. An MFLC is assigned to every school in the surrounding area, including DoDEA and local school systems. Parent permission is required before an MFLC engages with a child. For a kid dealing with another move, new friends, or deployment, knowing that support exists can be reassuring.

Moving in the middle of the school year?

Welcome to military life. You might arrive in August, November, January, or approximately three days before your child's big school project is due. 😅 The best thing you can do is prepare before you leave your current location. Request copies of school and immunization records and hand-carry them, and research registration deadlines, sports tryouts, and extracurricular sign-ups before you arrive.

Keep these documents with you

  • School records and report cards
  • Immunization records
  • Birth certificate and proof of residency
  • IEP and evaluation records, if applicable
  • Test scores
  • Previous school contact information
  • Any enrollment paperwork

Do not put the only copies in the moving truck.

If your child has an IEP or special education needs

Bring copies of the IEP, evaluations, and other support records. Fort Stewart recommends hand-carrying pertinent school and medical documents and contacting the School Liaison in advance to plan the transition. The Exceptional Family Member Program can also help families navigate educational and community resources for children with qualifying special needs. Start that conversation before your PCS, not after you arrive.

How schools can affect your home search

This is where the school conversation and the real estate conversation connect. You might be thinking “we want to be close to Fort Stewart,” or “we'd rather have a bigger yard, even if we're farther out,” or “our teenager's school and activities are a priority,” or “we need before/after-school care because of our work schedules.” Those answers can completely change which homes make sense, so I like to talk through schools, commute, budget, and lifestyle together instead of as four separate decisions.

Ambar's school checklist before you choose a home

  • Find the assigned school. Don't rely on a listing website alone.
  • Look at your child's grade. Elementary, middle, and high school options can be very different.
  • Research programs that matter. AP, dual enrollment, gifted education, athletics, arts, STEM, JROTC, career programs, and extracurriculars.
  • Think about childcare. Start researching CDC and off-post options early.
  • Consider the commute. Your child's school commute and your Fort Stewart commute are both part of your daily routine.
  • Talk to the School Liaison. This is literally what they're there for.
  • Tour schools when possible. Online reviews help, but nothing replaces seeing a school and asking questions.

Fort Stewart's own school guidance recommends weighing student-teacher ratios, programs, activities, distance, before/after care, and overall fit for your child.

The bottom line

You may be looking at DoDEA schools on post, Liberty, Long, Bryan, or Wayne County schools, private schools, or different Pre-K and childcare options, depending on where you live and what your family needs. I wouldn't choose a home based on a school name alone. The goal isn't just a house close to Fort Stewart. It's a place where your whole family can settle in and actually feel at home.
